These temples are associated with Kobo Daishi (Kukai) and are the most important pilgrimage sites in the Shikoku region. This pilgrimage, also known as the “Shikoku Henro,” starts in Tokushima Prefecture (Awa Province), continues through Kochi Prefecture (Tosa Province), Ehime Prefecture (Iyo Province), and Kagawa Prefecture (Sanuki Province), covering a distance of about 1450 kilometers. It is believed to dispel the 88 earthly desires of humans and is a spiritual journey for many people. It typically concludes with a visit to Mount Koya. Beneath the bridge, there is a walkway called “Uzu no Michi” from which you can view the whirlpools from about 45 meters above. There is also a whirlpool viewing room where you can see the whirlpools up close through a glass floor without boarding a tour boat. As the whirlpools’ occurrence times vary by day, it is recommended to check the tidal schedule on the Uzu no Michi website in advance. Nearby, there is the Otsuka Museum of Art, which displays over 1000 famous Western art masterpieces.
